Shawn Michaels Top 10 WrestleMania Matches

They don’t call Shawn Michaels “Mr. WrestleMania” just for fun. As good as the Heartbreak Kid is normally in the ring, he turns it up a notch further when it comes to WrestleMania. Myself and Justin created WWE’s Top 10 MUST SEE WrestleMania Matches and a lot of folks were upset that Shawn Michaels didn’t have more matches on the list. Look, I am one of the biggest HBK fans in the world, and I did not want to turn that list into a Shawn Michaels list because, its just not simply fair to the wonderful diversity of matches we ultimately chose. With that being said, here are Shawn Michaels Top 10 WrestleMania Matches.

Tatanka (WrestleMania IX)

Shawn Michaels defends his Intercontinental Championship vs Tatanka at WrestleMania 9.

Often times people forget how good Shawn Michaels entire singles career he was. For a lot of fans, their memories don’t really expand passed 1996 when Shawn really did come into his own, however his match at WrestleMania IX to open the show in Las Vegas was put together very well. Add Tatanka’s solid ring work, Luna Vachon and Sensational Sherri to the mix, and you’ve got yourself an underrated WrestleMania match.

Ric Flair (WrestleMania XXIV)

Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair in his last match at WrestleMania XXIV.

This match will wind up in a different spot on anybody’s list, but it will make it regardless. When Ric Flair put his career on the line against Shawn Michaels in Orlando at WrestleMania XXIV you knew it would be, not only a very good match, but an emotional one. In a match that pulled on your heartstrings, it’s not possible to create a list of HBK WrestleMania matches and not include this.

Stone Cold Steve Austin (WrestleMania XIV)

Stone Cold Steve Austin challenged Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XIV.

Give me a healthy Shawn Michaels in this match and you potentially have yourself one of Shawn’s greatest WrestleMania matches of all time, unfortunately a back injury hindered that. We had a white hot Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mike Tyson and a rawkus crowd in Boston. Shawn gave the audience the absolute best match that he was capable of giving, but the pain of his back problems were insurmountable.

John Cena (WrestleMania 23)

Shawn Michaels takes on WWE Champion John Cena at WrestleMania 23.

Shawn Michaels may in fact be the reason the crowds forever turned on John Cena. What a slugfest the two men put on in Detroit at WrestleMania 23. John Cena, like him or not, has always been a solid ring worker, pair him with Shawn Michaels and now you’ve got magic.

Razor Ramon (WrestleMania X)

Razor Ramon vs Shawn Michaels in WWE first ever televised ladder match for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania X.

I kept this match out of my Top 5 for the sole reason that I enjoyed their SummerSlam 1995 match much more than this one. Madison Squared Garden was certainly in for a treat because they had no idea what to expect, except for the fact that they got to see Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels battle it out in the first-ever (yes, I know) ladder match in the WWE. Both had claims to the Intercontinental Championship, so what a better way to decide whom is the rightful champion than to hoist it up in the sky?

Bret Hart (WrestleMania XII)

The first ever Iron Man Match in WrestleMania history. Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XII.

60 Minutes was not enough for Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart to determine a winner, they had to go into overtime. Before the match even started we had a spectacle with Shawn Michaels entering the ring from the rafters of The Anaheim Pond on a zip line. I know some fans don’t appreciate the amount of headlocks in this match used as filler, but this match had everything and ultimately shot Shawn Michaels into superstardom forever.

Undertaker (WrestleMania 26)

Shawn Michales put his career on the line against The Undertakers streak at WresltleMania XXVI.

Career vs Streak. WrestleMania. Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker II. Need I say more?

Chris Jericho (WrestleMania XIX)

Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XIX in 2003.

This was a dream match for a lot of people when Chris Jericho debuted in the WWE in 1999. Until Shawn Michaels returned to the ring in 2002, it was just that, a dream. Two similar styles, two iconic wrestlers, on the grandest stage of them all. Chris Jericho idolized Shawn Michaels growing up, and you could tell that in a lot of his past ring work, and when they battled it out at WrestleMania XIX in Seattle, we got a true classic.

Kurt Angle (WrestleMania 21)

It can’t get much better than Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 21.

Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels has an argument for #1, and I would not fault you if that’s where it is on your list. By 2005, you already had enough material of Kurt and Shawn to know that it was going to be an absolutely tremendous match. The build up to this match was nothing short of perfect. This is a match for the ages, and as a friend of mine often says. This match should be played at every single wrestling school.

Undertaker (WrestleMania 25)

Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 in Houston, TX.

For me, there is no way this is not my personal #1 match of Shawn Michaels WrestleMania matches. Since 1991, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker were on WrestleMania cards together, and they never crossed paths. Until it finally happened at WrestleMania XXV. A 30 minute perfectly worked match from two of the greatest wrstlers of all time. With the false finishes, the Heaven vs Hell entrances, the high flying back and forth action left my jaw on the floor of the entire match. I expected it to be good, I did not expect it to be one of the best matches I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching.
