Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: everything you need to know

-

Since 2007, Ubisoft has been pleasing gamers since the release of their infamous games in the Assassin’s Creed series. This action-role playing game series has become one of the top series in gaming history; furthermore, with the development of this new Assassin’s Creed installment, we get to explore a different aspect in history.

Norse Mythology

In old Norse Valhöll, Valhalla means “the hall of the fallen”. According to various articles on Norse Mythology, Odin, the god of wisdom, poetry, divination, and magic, is basically the creator of this hall. If a warrior wants to reach Valhalla, he or she must prove that they are worthy in the sight of Odin. In the first Thor movie, Thor Odinson, the God of Thunder, references Valhalla to encourage a fellow warrior.

According to Ubisoft, this particular game takes place during England’s Dark Ages in the 9th century. According to Ashraf Ismail, the Creative Director, gamers will visit four crucial English kingdoms pertaining to that period: Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. Ismail stated that this game will be far more grounded than its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. However, Ubisoft hasn’t released anything pertaining to the gods in Norse Mythology. During the trailer, we saw Odin make an appearance. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that fans will get some form of Norse gods, but only time will tell.

Gameplay and New Mechanics

Valhalla will follow the fighting styles of the previous Assassin’s Creed games; however, there are quite a new few things that have us feeling like kids on Christmas morning. A new combat system allows players to dual-wield any variation of weapons, and there are apparently a new variety of enemies to face. For the first time, you can dual-wield shields during combat. Whether you like to charge in and know enemies down, or be a master of stealth, the weapon system seems to be one of the best this franchise has offered. For those who have played Assassin’s Creed II, the hidden blade was one of the greatest implementations in that game. For Valhalla, the hidden blade returns, and gamers can enjoy some nostalgia while playing this new installment.

Along with the new weapon system, there are several other new features in this game. For instance, you can now raid like a true Viking, develop settlements, and gamers have the potential to expand their power and influence over lands. All of these features are quite amazing, but there’s one feature that personally, I think is the best. In regards to developing settlements, players can construct and upgrade tattoo parlors, barracks, blacksmiths, and much more that’ll be revealed later on.

Release Date

In the trailer, it ended stating that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla would be available “Holiday 2020.” If history does indeed repeat itself, then that statement would be even more applicable to this instance. Odyssey came out October 5th, 2018; therefore, it’s safe to assume that Valhalla will come out around the same time. The game will be available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC, and Stadia. Over the next few months, Ubisoft will release more information, possible gameplay trailers, and other features involved in their newest installment.
