Can Arenado beat “The Effect” to finally win MVP

Denver Co. – Its hard to imagine that 175 hits, 38 homeruns and 110 RBIs is a down year, but it was just that for the Rockies All-star third baseman, especially over the last 4 season Nolan Arenado has proven to be one of the leagues best, with a resume that includes two 40 homerun seasons, multiple bouts of over 130 RBIs and most noteworthy a defensive prowess known league wide that’s collected him 6 consecutive gold gloves to start his career.

How has a player whose averaged 39 homeruns, 180 hits, 125 RBIs and a .296 Avg over the previous 4 seasons not won MVP? Let’s look at the numbers of the previous four.

  • 2018 – Christian Yelich – 187 hits – 36 homeruns – 110 RBIs – .326 Avg
  • Nolan Arenado – 175 hits – 38 homeruns – 110 RBIs – .297 Avg
  • 2017 – Giancarlo Stanton – 168 hits – 59 homeruns – 132 RBIs – .281 Avg
  • Nolan Arenado – 187 hits – 37 homeruns – 130 RBIs – .309 Avg
  • 2016 – Kris Bryant – 176 hits – 39 homeruns – 102 RBIs – .292 Avg
  • Nolan Arenado – 182 hits – 41 homeruns – 133 RBIs – .294 Avg
  • 2015 – Bryce Harper – 172 hits – 42 homeruns – 99 RBIs – .330 Avg
  • Nolan Arenado – 177 hits – 42 homeruns – 130 RBIs – .287 Avg

There’s a case to be made that Arenado should have won MVP in both 15 and 16, obviously the listed stats are not all that’s factored into the vote, but on most major stats on those years Arenado was equal to or better than, while also winning the gold glove.

Unfortunately, due to “The Effect” there has always been a stigma that goes along with playing in Colorado, claims of boosted stats, which include the long ball, are related to the higher altitude of Coors Field.

He’s a proven All-star and gold glover just settling into his prime, so we will see over the next 8 years of his recently signed extension if the California product can beat the critics and “The Effect” to finally win the MVP.

So, I pose these questions to you;

Can you fault a player for the park he plays at?

Where does Nolan Arenado stand amongst todays best?

Will he finally beat “The Effect” and win the MVP?
