On typically, the only reliable source for anything Game of Thrones, creator George R.R. Martin’s official blog we were treated to some news regarding HBO’s Game of Thrones prequels, and the news is good. If you fancy that sort of thing. Martin took to his blog to say the following:
Oh, and speaking of television, don’t believe everything you read. Internet reports are notoriously unreliable. We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term “spinoffs”) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely. The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say.
It should be noted that all of these “successor” shows will take place thousands of years prior to Daenerys claim to the Iron Throne, or any character you are currently familiar with. The off chance that the Night King is featured in any of these series is the best chance. The major certainty is that you will get a heckuva lot of backstory, as it’s been stated many times before…The history of Westero’s is not what you have imagined.
As long as HBO values these series, and puts the same effort into them as their previous shows and current Game of Thrones franchise, we will be in for a treat. Prequels, or successor stories, as Martin prefers to call them, are not often met with a positive response.
